here’s the thing about the Avatar universe. the first series was geared towards kids in general (possibly skewed towards boys, but let’s be real it was popular all around) and had a male protagonist, so the show was all about action and saving the world and character growth and it was beautiful and perfect. they had plenty of time to write all the episodes and season arcs (although season 2 did get a little weird but whatever). with Korra, they made the first season without planning to extend it further. it was only ever meant to be 12 episodes long so they wanted to fit an entire story into 12 40-minute episodes. that’s doable! it’s probably happened before and with proper planning the first season could have been really excellent as a stand-alone piece. BUT what happened is the main character became female and the target audience became teenagers (the kids who “grew up” with Aang had aged a few years, so the show did, too). and apparently the writers decided that teenage girls are mostly interested in romantic plots over individual character development and world-saving plots. but they ALSO wanted to include a Strong Female Character, so Korra became this weird feisty tough mean warrior woman who also has boy problems. instead of using their 12 episodes to tell a good story, they crammed in a totally unnecessary love square that had no basis of attraction from any angle. so the ACTUAL FREAKING PLOT (all that stuff with Amon, the Equalists, Republic City’s government, and Korra learning airbending and getting in touch with her spiritual connection) were all just squished in next to the love square.
season 2 is just a hot mess of awful i don’t even know how to explain how dumb it is.
